img_9693

Jump on the bandwagon of Chicken Rice Frenzy!

We’ve all had that plate of chicken rice we find unforgettable. Mamas and Bubbas love chicken rice. Singaporeans and foreigners, too, love chicken rice. Time and again, it has proven to be a bridge between generations and cultures.

Here is a list of suggestions that we feel has topped the chicken rice standards in Singapore thus far.

1.      Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice

There is a reasonable explanation why the queue for Tian Tian meanders with madness. “Is Tian Tian chicken rice THAT good, or is it overrated?” We’ve decided to address this fervent question.

As the chicken rice stall to have beaten Gordon Ramsay in a cook-off in 2013, there is no better way to convince you how Tian Tian is a to-try-before-you-die chicken rice.

Here’s our verdict: if you are a lover of the chicken skin (yes collagen!) and only the most tender meat, Tian Tian is for you. Expect to finish it in record-breaking time – but do let us warn you that the queue gets incredibly long especially during lunch hours.

2.      Boon Tong Kee

Boon Tong Kee is easily one of the names with the highest recall amongst chicken rice-goers. “Boon Tong Kee must try!” as we spoke to many of its patrons validating the brand as their all-time favourite.

Here’s what we think: The rice is cooked to perfection – fragrance in every grain distinct, altogether adding on an extra ‘oomph’ with its sauces and the chicken meat. Yes, the rice did steal the show and had us beckoning for seconds.

3.      Wee Nam Kee Chicken Rice Restaurant

Wee Nam Kee is yet another familiar name that resounds with the locals. Also one of the family favourites, Wee Nam Kee is hot on our list for its unpretentious plate of chicken rice.

What you see is what you get: its Hainanese chicken glistens just with a light sheen of oil on the surface; both its steamed and roasted chicken embody a balance of lean meat and fats that will surely satisfy your craving.

Address: 101 Thomson Road, #01-08 United Square | Contact Number: 6255 6396

Operating Hours: Mondays to Sundays (10:30am-10:30pm)

4.      5 Star Hainanese Chicken Rice

Bubbas were enamoured with 5 Star Hainanese Chicken Rice, specifically with its steamed chicken. The softness and moisture of the meat makes the seemingly ordinary plate of chicken rice very palatable for kids.

Weight-conscious mamas however felt that the chicken might be a tad too oily, nonetheless it shouldn’t matter to occasionally indulge in cheat meals. Overall, we still give this a thumbs up.

Main Outlet

Address: 7 Cheong Chin Nam Road (Opposite Beauty World) | Contact Number: 6466 3000

Operating Hours: Mondays to Sundays (10:30am-12mn)

5.      Chatterbox, Mandarin Orchard Hotel

Feeling fancy and wish for a more ‘atas’ plate of chicken rice? Go fine-dining at Chatterbox for a weekend family retreat. We promise that the quality and ambience is worth breaking the bank for.

It was definitely interesting to pair a glass of wine with the traditional chicken rice – we couldn’t resist ordering something off their wine list. We highly recommend Chatterbox to all the cosmopolitan mamas out there who enjoy a good food-fusion.

Main Outlet

Address: 333 Orchard Road, Level 5 Mandarin Orchard Hotel | Contact Number: 6831 6291

Operating Hours: Sundays to Thursdays (11am – 1am)

Fridays, Saturdays & Public Holiday (10am – 2am)

AND THE WINNER IS…..

Although all of the above are close contenders for the first place, we enjoyed Tian Tian Chicken Rice the most. Ultimately, the winner in the 2013 cook-off against Gordon Ramsay has coined its name a national pride in the hawker landscape.

We hereby wish for the Hainanese Chicken Rice legacy to live forever in our heartlands. Do comment below if your favourite chicken rice stall is worth a mention in this article!
