The Fernandez family bonds through golf.

Living near a driving range, Mr and Mrs Fernandez plays at the driving range frequently and came across Coach Andrew Marrow who is a very dedicated golf coach.  They noticed how patient Coach Andrew is and saw the opportunity for the Fernandez children to learn the sport and start to play as a family.

The Fernandez girls were playing at the HSBC Women’s Champions National Qualifying Tournament and we took the opportunity to talk to them and Mrs Fernandez.

BM: What advice would you give to parents when they engage their children in competitive sports?

Mrs Fenandez: It is good to have balance and so we don’t set a high expectation for them at a young age but to let them have fun with the sports.

BM: What is the commitment as a parent?

Mrs Fenandez: My husband is very dedicated to the game as he is a social golfer himself, he makes an effort to train the girls and to be updated on the latest equipment available for the girls. Our elder son who is 16 years old this year also plays golf and help to coach the girls with the skills he learnt from the golf classes (although they are all in the same class together).

10 years old Anne Fernandez is the youngest qualifiers for the HSBC Women’s Champions National Qualifying Tournament. Anne started playing golf at 4 and dreams of becoming a world class golf player.  Winning the National Primary School Championship 2016 last year, it is her first time taking part in the HSBC Women’s Champions National Qualifying Tournament and she is excited she is able to follow her favourite idol at the HSBC Women’s Champions.

THE SIBLING RIVALRY IS HEALTHY

Unlike other family’s sibling rivalry, the Fernandez family’s is healthy because they are competitive with each other when it comes to golf. They sought to improve their swings and enjoy their golf game with the different landscapes they see each time.

Anne’s elder sister, 14 years old Margaret Fernandez won the Singapore National Amateur Championship 2016 last year and is also playing in HSBC Women’s Champions National Qualifying Tournament this year for the first time. She hopes to turn professional and is taking this opportunity to meet the worldwide players in person at HSBC Women’s Champion.

Catch the best female players at this year’s HSBC Women’s Champions happening this March 2017.
