UNDERSTANDING THE RISK OF IRON DEFICIENCY

Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutrient deficiencies in the world, with women and runners being more at risk.

According to a recent screening of 600 female runners in Singapore, nearly one in two women was deficient in iron. Many of the women screened were unaware that their iron stores were depleted. The screening was carried out by testing more than 600 runners taking part in the annual Civil Service Club Run in 2015.

Symptoms of iron deficiency include fatigue, shortness of breath, depression, hair loss and brittle nails. The most common yet typically overlooked cause of iron deficiency is heavy menstrual bleeding. Poor diet is another cause. There also seems to be a connection between running and iron deficiency.

Another concern, and a very important concern would be the problems caused by iron deficiency during pregnancy.  The YouTube channel for Iron Deficiency is packed with information needed for mothers to be too.

Professor Yong Tze Tein, a Senior Consultant at Singapore General Hospital, said: “The numbers are surprising, all when proper diet and effective treatment are actually very much within reach. There definitely needs to be greater awareness among both doctors and women alike.”

Good info especially for pregnant munnies and runners. Red meat, liver and spinach are great sources of iron.

  6. Liang May says:

I was having really bad results for my iron tests that I had to go through Iron infusions 3 times during my first pregnancy. I would black out, pant with cold beads of sweat. Sometimes I'll vomit because of it. Very real issue! Thanks for sharing.

  7. That's useful to know.
