JOURNEY TO THE WEST THIS CHINESE NEW YEAR AT GARDENS BY THE BAY

As the year of the monkey approaches, Gardens by the Bay draws inspiration from the Chinese classical tale “Journey to the West” (西游记) and is transformed into a stunning landscape of dahlias, begonias and other blooms against the backdrop of a lofty 7-metre-tall mountain. “Dahlia Dreams” brings to mind the mythical “Flowers and Fruit Mountain” (花果山) where the legendary Monkey King (孙悟空) was said to be born, as well as “Water Curtain Cave” (水帘洞) that was described in the novel.

“Dahlia Dreams” is the first in a series of music-themed floral displays at Gardens by the Bay in 2016. Embark on a musical odyssey around the world and celebrate the harmony of nature this year as the Gardens’ floral displays come to life with the energetic beats of Taiko drums, the retro tunes of the jukebox, or the pulsating rhythm of tribal dance.

Visitors can enjoy guided tours of the scenic garden trails, or try their hand at traditional craft activities of spring and bring their creations home. There will be Spring performances and special appearances by the Monkey King himself.

As it’s the season to spend time with loved ones, Gardens by the Bay celebrates both Valentine’s Day and the last day of the Lunar New Year (元宵节), which is commonly associated with family bonding by “Say(ing) it with Love” across two consecutive weekends! Catch romantic movies under the stars with loved ones, get serenaded by local artistes, and be entertained by comedic theatre group The Handlebards from the UK.

Alongside the festive displays and celebrations, there will also be talks and workshops to make pineapple tarts as well as chocolate truffles. Also, to round off the SG50 celebrations, “The Future of Us” exhibition – an immersive and multi-sensory experience that offers a glimpse into the possibilities of how Singaporeans can live, work, play, learn and grow as a community in the future, will be ongoing daily until 8 March 2016.
