UNDERSTANDING THE UNIVERSE AND THE SKY FROM A CHILD’S PERSPECTIVE – INSPIRING A NEW GENERATION OF ASTROPHYSICISTS

What do you get when you introduce renowned American Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, host of COSMOS : A Spacetime Odyssey, and Ann Druyan, co-writer, executive creator and director of the new 13-part series, to a room of primary school students?

What we witnessed was one of the most epic journeys into understanding the universe that the curious 7 to 10 year olds could have ever imagined.

Hosting Neil deGrasse Tyson, Ann Druyan along with their audience of primary school students was the Jurong Regional Library.

With questions like, “How do you measure distance between stars?” and “Why did you choose to demote Pluto?”, Ann’s inspirational vision for science edutainment, together with Neil’s magnetic storytelling, delighted their young minds with the wonders of the stars, planets and galaxies beyond Earth.

Students from Endeavour Primary School, Greendale Primary School and Chatsworth International School were delighted with their Cosmic Journey. Their sneak peek at a the view of the ‘Sky from a Child’s Perspective’ left them starry eyed with great-beaming smiles as they left Jurong Regional Library.

Earlier in the day, Neil and Ann were in deep conversation with some 800 National University of Singapore (NUS) students as they gained insight and discussed the universe in detail. Individuals at NUS thanked and congratulated Neil deGrasse Tyson and Ann Druyan on their published works and shows.

A final question from one student asking Neil deGrasse Tyson to share his most romantic phenomenon in the universe was met with Neil’s answer “It will be everything I have witnessed, including all of you. You are all heavenly bodies.”
