FAIRPRICE FOOD VOUCHER SCHEME RECEIVES S$1 MILLION AFTER OVERWHELMING SUPPORT AT THE ANNUAL FAIRPRICE WALKS WITH U EVENT
Saturday 30 August 2014 saw Singapore’s second annual FairPrice Walks With U event and, same as last year, this fully sold out family bonding walk event was met with an enthusiastic response from citizens.
FairPrice Foundation uses this annual FairPrice Walks With U event to promote family bonding, promote healthy living and, most importantly, FairPrice gives generously to low-income families via its Food Voucher Scheme.
Indeed, this FairPrice Walks with U event had its second outing last Saturday (30 August 2014) and the FairPrice Foundation pledged to donate S$100 in food vouchers to the Food Voucher Scheme for every registered participant. In addition, FairPrice also pledged an additional S$10 in FairPrice vouchers to the Scheme for every Instagram, Twitter or Facebook post that carried the official hashtag ‘fairpricewalk’.
FairPrice Foundation works with grassroot organisations (GROs) and welfare organisations to identify low-income families and individuals who need assistance in meeting their daily needs. FairPrice vouchers are distributed to low-income families through GROs of all 87 constituencies to benefit an estimated 20,000 low income families and individuals. Part of the FairPrice Voucher Scheme also goes towards benefitting selected welfare organisations.
Inspired by the enthusiastic support of citizens and for their responses to social media posts, FairPrice Foundation decided to donate a total of S$1 million to the FairPrice Food Voucher Scheme this year. This brings donations close to S$12 million since the FairPrice Food Voucher Scheme was first launched in June of 2002.
Mr Bobby Chin, Chairman of NTUC FairPrice, addressed the crowds before flag off at 8am. In his speech he noted that, this year saw an additional 1,000 participants taking part, bringing the 2014 participant total to 6,000 friends and supporters. Before the families set out on their 5km walk around the iconic Marina Bay backdrop and through the Gardens by the Bay, Mr Bobby Chin thanked all participants and ended his speech with the statement
“Singaporeans will never walk alone; FairPrice will always walk with you!”
This year, FairPrice Walks With U was given a new theme ‘Walk Around The World’ that saw participants being entertained by carnival games and various entertainment acts including Samba dancers from Brazil, Greek statues, Chinese contortionists, Japanese Cosplayers and Cheerleaders from the USA.
Walking for a cause, raising funds for the under privileged while spending quality time with the family makes the FairPrice Walks With U event a winner with us!
Congratulations to all participants and lets hope more events like this will be organized in the future.
