3. DBS Offers Complimentary Delivery of DBS QR Gift Cards to Customers this CNY
DBS is offering a complimentary click-and-deliver service to make it even easier for customers to obtain their DBS QR Gift cards. Until 26 January, customers will be able to order their desired amount of DBS QR Gift cards online and DBS will deliver them by mail, at no cost, by 10 February.
The DBS QR Gift (popularly known as ‘QR Ang Bao’) enables customers to load cash values onto unique QR codes and is Singapore’s only ‘phygital’ alternative to gifting. It allows customers to preserve and continue the CNY tradition of giving and receiving red packets, and at the same time, contributes to a more sustainable environment. Since its launch in 2019, DBS QR Gift has been well-received by customers with around SGD 2.8 million loaded onto QR gift cards during CNY last year.
Jeremy Soo, Head of Consumer Banking Group (Singapore), DBS Bank said, “Exchanging ang baos is a well-loved and time-honoured CNY tradition that symbolises good fortune and luck. We believe DBS QR Gift is a good balance between tradition and technology. By offering the complimentary delivery service, we hope to make the DBS QR Gift cards a lot more accessible to our customers, so they can keep the tradition going and safely share good blessings with their loved ones even during the pandemic.”
Celebrating a sustainable CNY with DBS QR Gift
DBS QR Gift cards are made of environmentally-friendly, FSC-certified paper, and are designed to be gifted on their own – thus doing away with the need for new notes and red packets, both of which incur significant carbon footprint. According to the Monetary Authority of Singapore, printing new notes generates around 330 tonnes of carbon emissions every year. Red packets, with the amount of ink and gold stamping involved, are also not easy to recycle and often end up incinerated.
To this end, DBS partnered Tay Paper Recycling in 2019 to launch a dedicated red packet recycling initiative – the first bank in Singapore to do so – to collect and recycle red packets, DBS QR Gift cards and even Mandarin orange carriers. Collected recyclables are then converted into paper pulp, then mixed with other raw materials to create new paper products. Located at DBS/POSB branches and available all-year-round, these recycling bins have collected 210 trees (or 12,500 kg) worth of recyclables till date.

The Fortune Cat, or Maneki-neko, is a lucky cat talisman popular in Chinese and Japanese cultures, believed to attract good luck and fortune for its owners. 9. Bai Nian with Qoo10!
Since December, there has been an increase in demand for Chinese New Year (CNY) related products such as abalone, snacks and Bak Kwa. Average cart size for food products are still increasing thus we believe that consumers are still looking forward to their CNY gatherings.
Generally, as compared to 2020, we have seen a 30 – 50% increase in sellers selling CNY related products. More sellers have tapped on Qxpress services like QPrime today or QPrime next day, which offers door-to-door delivery with the most competitive rates in Singapore ever since COVID-19. There is also an increase in advertising activities, tapping on our search and display channels on our website. Sellers are also tapping onto our experienced merchandising experts who offer training and consultation services to businesses.
More shoppers are purchasing more premium food products and bundles – we have noticed many customers purchases bundled whole abalones which cost >$100. For the past 14 days, we have also received high demand for Yu Sheng and Pen Cai. Although we are still a month away from CNY, this is a good indicator that our consumers are not very much affected by the safe distancing rules. Shoppers also enjoy more products with gifts with purchases and free delivery. For instance, Lifebuoy is giving away free red packets with every two Disney Tsum Tsum hand sanitisers purchased and a free Tsum Tsum CNY pouch with handwash purchase for a limited time exclusively on Qoo10.
New Moon’s 2 + 1 Abalone Bundle (Sale Price: $60) is one of the top 3 abalone listings on Qoo10. The product picked up in 2021, with a 200% increase in sales in the first week of 2021 as compared to the last week of 2020. Other than different types of abalones, interesting flavours such as Mala and Black Truffle abalone are also available on Qoo10. We are expecting sales for abalone to increase as we are nearing Chinese New Year.
We are also seeing an upward trend for the 1+1 Yoshihama Abalone (starting from $14.90) from Lao Ban Niang, with a 13 times sales increase for the last week of December as compared to the first week of December. For the first week of January, the product was sold 15.7 times as compared to the same week in December. Buyers are also looking forward such steal buys, as the Ah Ma Favourite Brine (2 bottles of 425g) will always be wiped out after restocking.
As shared by e-commerce manager of Lao Bao Niang, Jeremy Kou (辜家泰), there was a significant impact on their retail side of the business due to COVID-19. All their stocks from China had an increase in their shipping charges, which resulted in the general price increase. However, due to an influx of Chinese abalone supplies this year, the price is actually lower than in previous years. Consumers should note that the prices would definitely increase once the new supply comes in. “At Lao Ban Niang, we sell our products at affordable prices for everyone especially in the current situation.” Lao Ban Niang is a family-owned business selling a wide range of food products from TCM to CNY goodies and seafood.
Bottled bird nests are another CNY favourites, Emperor Brand remarked that there has been an increase in corporate orders for their employees. More companies are ordering bottled bird nests to reward and as a form of appreciation to their employees instead of sending gifts to their clients. “People are still looking forward to celebrating CNY”, director of Emperor Brand Birdsnest, Tan Fei Yee (陈慧瑜) mentioned.
Emperor Brand’s product prices generally also went up, as there is a low supply and delayed shipment due to COVID-19. Sea cucumber, one of the more popular CNY products, was supposed to arrive last year November but shipment is still on the way while customers are looking forward to purchasing it. Also due to COVID-19 and more options, the brand has seen an increase in preference of deliveries and e-payments.
Since COVID-19, “mask” has been a highly sought after product and has always been on our top searched keywords. Sellers have also been bringing in more designs and products to cater to the buyers and the festive events which resulted in a 300% increase in CNY mask sales.
Our buyers also prefer to purchase from our local sellers as compared to overseas sellers. Local seller, GLADLEIGH, is very committed to bringing in new and innovative products for buyers. They have four different CNY disposable face masks designs available in both adults and kids sizes. The product is ranked top 10 on Qoo10, just shortly a week after the product was listed and is currently available for pre-order. Other festive items listed from GLADLEIGH also include CNY doormats.
Another seller, Mr ING has available in stocks for their CNY series. This seller is new to Qoo10, having only registered in November 2020. Their sales for the masks have increased 3.38 times in January as compared to December and they have added their new CNY masks stocks on Friday.
