3. DBS Offers Complimentary Delivery of DBS QR Gift Cards to Customers this CNY
DBS is offering a complimentary click-and-deliver service to make it even easier for customers to obtain their DBS QR Gift cards. Until 26 January, customers will be able to order their desired amount of DBS QR Gift cards online and DBS will deliver them by mail, at no cost, by 10 February.
The DBS QR Gift (popularly known as ‘QR Ang Bao’) enables customers to load cash values onto unique QR codes and is Singapore’s only ‘phygital’ alternative to gifting. It allows customers to preserve and continue the CNY tradition of giving and receiving red packets, and at the same time, contributes to a more sustainable environment. Since its launch in 2019, DBS QR Gift has been well-received by customers with around SGD 2.8 million loaded onto QR gift cards during CNY last year.

Celebrating a sustainable CNY with DBS QR Gift
DBS QR Gift cards are made of environmentally-friendly, FSC-certified paper, and are designed to be gifted on their own – thus doing away with the need for new notes and red packets, both of which incur significant carbon footprint. According to the Monetary Authority of Singapore, printing new notes generates around 330 tonnes of carbon emissions every year. Red packets, with the amount of ink and gold stamping involved, are also not easy to recycle and often end up incinerated.
To this end, DBS partnered Tay Paper Recycling in 2019 to launch a dedicated red packet recycling initiative – the first bank in Singapore to do so – to collect and recycle red packets, DBS QR Gift cards and even Mandarin orange carriers. Consumers should note that the prices would definitely increase once the new supply comes in. “At Lao Ban Niang, we sell our products at affordable prices for everyone especially in the current situation.” Lao Ban Niang is a family-owned business selling a wide range of food products from TCM to CNY goodies and seafood.
Bottled bird nests are another CNY favourites, Emperor Brand remarked that there has been an increase in corporate orders for their employees. More companies are ordering bottled bird nests to reward and as a form of appreciation to their employees instead of sending gifts to their clients. “People are still looking forward to celebrating CNY”, director of Emperor Brand Birdsnest, Tan Fei Yee (陈慧瑜) mentioned.
Emperor Brand’s product prices generally also went up, as there is a low supply and delayed shipment due to COVID-19. Another seller, Mr ING has available in stocks for their CNY series. This seller is new to Qoo10, having only registered in November 2020. Their sales for the masks have increased 3.38 times in January as compared to December and they have added their new CNY masks stocks on Friday.
