It is widely known that skin ageing is primarily caused by free radicals in the environment, as well as photo-ageing.
Now, Sulwhasoo has discovered another mitigating factor: heat. Quite timely too, as we are about to enter the summer months, filled with loads of outdoor activities in the sun.
How Heat Causes Ageing
The discovery was a result of a 10-year collaboration between Korea’s number one luxury holistic skincare brand and Seoul National University Hospital Dermatologist Professor Jin-ho Jung and his team.
Tests showed that when a person’s skin is exposed to the sun for 30-minutes, skin temperature rises to 41-43 degrees. Once skin temperature exceeds 37 degrees, there is an increase in the number of blood vessels, and the gross skin area expands while collagen and other elastic fibers are destroyed.
Their findings conclude that when skin is repeatedly exposed to heat, its elasticity diminishes, and this accelerates the ageing process.
The Answer: Thermal Protection Factor
In response to the findings, Sulwhasoo and Professor Jin developed Thermal Protection Factor, which refers to a product’s thermal protection factor or heat blocking properties that keeps your skin temperature consistent. Thus TPF 40 refers to 40 per-cent protection from external heat.
