FROM FORT CANNING TO TRAS STREET

Well known Italian fine dining establishment Gattopardo has shed its formal skin to don a slightly more casual look, focusing on sustainable seafood (previously a grill and pizza bar) with a new name to match: Ristorante di Mare.

The new venue sports more intimate sections (the balcony seats can get pretty cozy), with smaller capacity areas, and a pinch-sized seafood bar at level one—there’s only six counter seats. An overall more romantic ambience (especially at night), Gattopardo is great for a date with the spouse when the kids are away. From its previous location at Fort Canning to the current Tras Street venue, one thing remains the same: quality Italian cuisine by Chef Lino Sauro.

Stemming from Chef Lino’s South Italian roots, the new Gattopardo is committed to using only sustainable seafood sourced from “Friend of the Sea” Sustainable Seafood-Certified fisheries around the world. Mediterranean calamari ($28) is an elegant addition with pulpy orange, barley pearls and tarragon in a full-bodied red prawn sauce that’s more of a bisque—incredibly mouthwatering, although we did find the price rather steep (for a single piece of squid).

On to seafood, we sampled the Norweigian live scallop ($34 for two) cooked in the shell, accompanied by chickpea puree and sautéed broccoli rabe. Trust an Italian to get seafood done right—grilled perfectly to retain its plump sweetness and chewy texture.
