Halloween Arts and Craft with Mister Maker!

Halloween, the last day of October, usually has a special significance for children. It is this time of the year that kids can dress up in funny or ghostly ghoulish costumes and play “trick or treat?” games. There is no better time than Halloween for parents to spend quality time with your kids doing simple yet fun arts and crafts in preparation for this fun-filled day.

We were recently invited to a CbeebiesClub Mister Maker workshop focusing on arts and crafts for Halloween. Mister Maker, a Cbeebies programme, is an imaginative arts and crafts show for pre-schoolers which teaches and entertains kids in fun, imaginative and interactive ways. Through Mister Maker activities, kids will:

• Get different inspirations to make art and crafts from whole range of different materials
• Learn many different art techniques and explore different ways to create art
• Experiment with different colours, textures, shapes and sizes
• Develop hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills by cutting, sticking and colouring

During the fun and interactive Mister Maker themed workshop, two of our Bubbas Issac and Paige learnt how to make a (not so scary) hairy spider. The kids found it tedious at first but after they got the hang of it, they were thrilled to see their spiders forming shape. Below is the step by step guide for the Hairy Spider:-

Material Needed:

• Wool
• Paper
• 4 Pipe-cleaners
• Cardboard
• Glue stick
• Scissors
• Felt tip pen

Method:

1. Take a rectangle shaped piece of cardboard and cut 2 slits into either end
2. Cut a long piece of woll and feed it into the slits
3. Wrap the rest of the ball of wool around the cardboard, tie up the ends of the wool and trim any excess
4. Take the long pieces of wool out of the slits and tie them tightly around the ball of wool
5. Slide the wool off the cardboard. Turn it upside down and tie the pieces of wool again. Snip off the extra bits
6. Slowly and carefully, snip the loops around the edges making sure you don’t snip the middle as the spider will then fall apart
7. Tie on a long piece of wool (so that you can hang it), then scrunch your pipe cleaners up before pushing them through the ball of wool. Then bend them on both sides to make the 8 spider legs!
8. Draw on some eyes and teeth onto a white piece of paper
9. Cut them out and glue them onto the spider’s body and there it is! Your very own (not so scary) hairy spider!
