GASTRONOMIC EXPERIENCE WITH A GROOVY ATMOSPHERE
After a recent makeover, Blackbird Bistro & Bar expanded its space into a bistro and a bar, offering innovative fusion and a full bar with happy hour. The new menu, specially curated by head chef Ken Tan features delectable fusion dishes in beautiful presentation. Chef Tan is hearing impaired and is unable to express himself vocally, his inner thoughts are expressed through his culinary skills and creativity in the food.
We were hosted recently by Blackbird Bistro & Bar and found the ambience relaxing, great for a Friday after work with friends chilling or before a movie next door at Cathy. The bistro has dark colored furniture and vibrant ceilings of blackbirds flying in formation, mimicking a sanctuary for unwinding during happy hour.
We started with the Detox Drink ($12) which was made from carrot, ginger celery and beetroot apple. The drink was both refreshing and tasty which helped to quench our thirst. Moving on to starters, we had the Carrot & Tomato Soup($11), puréed carrots and puréed tomatoes soup served with toast, healthy with a tangy tomato flavour.
The Balsamic Tuna ($12) is seared tuna steak with mango salsa and balsamic glaze. The Seared Foie Gras ($16), served on a toasted brioche with figs jelly, crispy pumpkin and shiso green. Both dishes were beautiful presented while not compromising on the taste.
Savannah Grass Fed Angus Beef, Tenderloin
New Zealand 1st Class Grass Fed Lamb Rack
For those who have a savoury palate, the Miso Cod Fish ($32) and Souther Burger ($16) will definitely satisfy that craving that was built up during the day. The Miso Cod Fish is baked with Miso and served with parsnip puree, sautéed baby spinach and tempura courgette flower. The Southern Burger features a charbroiled chicken thigh with avocados and brie on sesame bun.
New Zealand inspired dishes like the Savannah Grass Fed Angus Beef (250g – $49.90) and New Zealand 1st Class Grass Fed Lamb Rack ($49.90) compliments the Havana Coffee (also imported from New Zealand). We were told that Blackbird Bistro & Bar is about the only place in Singapore to serve the Havana Coffee.
HITTING THE RIGHT NOTES OF THE COCKTAILS
Blackbird’s Nest
The Blackbird’s Nest, one of the specialties in the house, a fine brew made from Chinese wine Fen Jiu (汾酒), bird’s nest and red dates. Once we started sipping it, we couldn’t stop drinking and it brought back memories of my confinement days when I had to drink the date tea almost everyday.
Blackbird’s signature cocktail, Plantation Mojito ($12), is a healthy version of the Mojito which replaces the brown sugar with freshly-squeezed sugar cane juice, ideal happy hour drink for ladies who are watching their waistline.
Blackbird Bistro & Bar redefines east meets west with their unique cocktails and their western fusion menu, it is definitely a place to go to for a place to relax, enjoy good quality food and rejuvenate with their healthy juices and Havana Coffee.
